My Moon, Chapter 1 pg 7

         “Yeah…”

He nodded, even though he knew his friend couldn’t see his response. Klai wiped away the endless stream of tears with his hand. A staff member near the exit glanced at him occasionally, so Klai slipped into the bathroom. He thought he’d wash his face before leaving the bar.

Klai didn’t want anyone to see him as a crybaby.

Once inside the bathroom, Klai let out a relieved sigh—it was empty. He walked to the sink and said to the person on the call, “Kant, hang on a sec. I’m gonna wash my face first.”

[No need to wash it. When you tell me everything, you’re just gonna cry again.]

Klai, standing at the sink, froze. He looked up at his reflection in the mirror, thinking… he didn’t want to keep seeing a Klai with red, swollen eyes.

[You ready to tell me what happened?]

Not entirely ready, he closed his eyes and walked into an empty stall. Klai shut the door and locked it securely. He lowered the toilet lid with his hand and sat on it. Through tears, he began recounting the events to Kant. As he poured out the story, it felt like an old movie was replaying in his mind.

A movie Klai didn’t enjoy watching at all…

It’s the story of a boy who often encounters insincere friends and gets taken advantage of. No matter how cautious he is or how much he tries to avoid people, he keeps facing the same situations. If you had to pick the saddest scene in this movie, it would probably be during his final year of high school. He poured his heart into his friends, hoping for genuine sincerity in return. But it wasn’t what he expected at all…

“Klai is only good at studying, not at socializing.”

“True… otherwise, why would he only hang out with us?”

“Sometimes he’s just so boring. His life has no color, no excitement. Talking to him is all about school. Sometimes I’m so fed up I could puke.”

“But he helped us get into uni, didn’t he?”

“That’s partly because we’re smart too, right? Otherwise, no amount of tutoring would’ve gotten us through.”

“I say keep him around for school stuff, but as a real friend to hang out with? Nah, that won’t work.”

“Exactly… all he does is read books. I don’t know how Kant puts up with him.”

“Kant’s probably bored too but doesn’t say it because Klai keeps lending him money.”

“Poor guy… it’s like all his friends are just using him.”

The boy, the protagonist of this movie, is… Klaijai Borirat.

The conversation he overheard from his friends two years ago replayed in his mind, along with vivid memories. Klai stared at the gray door in front of him, thinking how the current situation felt so similar to back then. He was sitting alone in a cramped bathroom, but this time, the difference was that he didn’t have to listen to those piercing words that left him bruised and aching.

Now, there was only silence and the sound of his own sobs. Klai paused to catch his breath after recounting the story. He roughly wiped away his tears once more before taking a deep breath. Every time he faced something like this…

   He would tell himself:

“It’s okay to cry… but not for long.”

He had to smile again as soon as possible.

Not for anyone else… but for himself.

The lessons life threw at him made Klai stronger. But no matter how strong he became, today he still shed tears. That taught him that no one can be strong all the time.

Klai believed that even the strongest people… have cried alone too.

So, he had a phrase to comfort himself whenever things got tough:

“Some days, the world is cruel to us. Some days, it’s kind. In the end, that’s just how the world is.”

[“Finish those two projects and get out of the group, Klai.”]

“Actually, I’ve already left the group. But I think I’ll still have to see and talk to them a bit since we’ve got these two projects left.”

[Once this project is done, I won’t have to see or talk to those selfish jerks anymore… They dumped their work on you, making you stay up all night—that was already selfish enough. But this? This is next-level.]

   “I’m so hurt, I’m speechless…”

   [Hug, dude.]

   “Mm… hug.”

Kant’s comforting words always made him feel better…

   [You heading back yet?]

“About to head back… I’ve stopped crying now.”

   Creak!

Klai heard the sound of the large bathroom door opening. He glanced down at the gap beneath the door and saw the shadow of someone walking inside. He quickly said goodbye to his friend on the phone, ready to head back to his condo.

“Kant, that’s it for now. I’ll message you on LINE once I’m in the taxi.”

   [Okay, cool.]

Klai ended the call with his close friend and stood up to his full height. He slipped his phone into his pocket, preparing to leave the bathroom. But the sound of footsteps approaching made him glance at the gap beneath the door again. His throat tightened when he saw a pair of white sneakers.
