My Moon, Chapter 18.1 pg 5

Once the agreement was made, Klai began untangling the messy earphone cords, his arms still wrapped around Panli’s sturdy arm. After unraveling the knots, he handed one earbud to Panli. Klai put the other in his ear, then pulled his phone out of his pocket to plug in the earphones and prepare to play music. He glanced at the person beside him, who was looking at the phone screen.

“What song does you want to listen to?” Klai asked.

“Hmm, I want to hear the songs you liked listening to over the past two weeks…”

Klai furrowed his brows slightly before saying, “The songs I liked two weeks ago?”

   “Yes,” Panli confirmed.

Though he was curious about the reason, Klai wasn’t one to pry too much. So, he chose to play the songs he enjoyed two weeks ago, as Panli requested.

“I was listening to this song a lot back then,” Klai said.

“What’s the song called?” Panli asked.

Klai looked away from the phone screen after typing the song’s name, then lifted his gaze to Moon, who leaned in closer until their faces were… “Come Closer…”

Panli gave a sly smile and shot him a flirty look before saying playfully, “Are you talking about us or the song?”

   “Both.”

   “…”

As they locked eyes, mere inches apart, the melody of the song Come Closer started playing.

Come closer. I don’t want you to come closer. I’m not ready to step into this space yet, but it’s probably fine to mess it up. If it’s too clear, it might not feel as deep. Just this much, it’s not too much.

Klai thought listening to this song alone was embarrassing enough, but with Panli listening together, he was even more flustered.

Let me get closer to you little by little, seeping into your heart until I find your love.

   “…”

Don’t know what I’m thinking just yet. Let me dream and wander a bit longer. Just a little more, this is already good enough. Even if it’s fleeting, maybe just a small dream, I’ll keep waiting. If I push too hard, I’m afraid you’ll pull away, your heart drifting far from mine, never to return.

   “…”

Take it slow, keep some distance, maybe step back a bit. But no matter what, my heart won’t change. I love you because I want to love you, and I don’t want to love in vain. No matter what, my heart won’t waver.

The song looped back to the chorus, but their eyes never left each other. Klai swallowed hard, loosening his embrace from the other’s strong arm to create some distance.

Let me get closer to you little by little, seeping into your heart until I find your love.

But as the car suddenly swerved right, as if turning back to the other side of the road, the force threw Moon toward him. Klai instinctively placed a hand on his sturdy chest to brace against the momentum. But Panli’s face came so close that… their lips brushed lightly.

The smaller guy’s eyes widened in shock before he gently touched his lips. It couldn’t fully be called a kiss since it happened so quickly, and their lips didn’t press together like in the romantic movies he’d seen.

Still, Klai felt he’d given his “first kiss” to Panli. Moon bit his lower lip lightly, giving him a playful, mischievous look before saying softly, “Sorry, I wasn’t careful just now.”

   “N-No… it’s fine. I understand…”

Klai replied, placing both hands on his lap and looking down at his phone. The moment had thrown him off so much that he didn’t even hear the song playing anymore. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and pursed his lips tightly.

The final verse of the song made him so embarrassed he could hardly stand it. One slender hand reached up to touch his burning ear. Truth be told, Klaijai felt hot all over. He desperately wanted to run into the sea to cool off, but the car, slowing down due to heavy traffic, forced him to accept that…

They’d have to stay this close for a few more hours.

“I think we got a bit too close just now,” Moon said, smirking beside him.

Moon tapped his own lips with his index finger, then pointed at Klaijai’s, as if emphasizing, “When the car turned… our lips brushed against each other.”

   “…”

Klaijai was so flustered he turned his face away. But a gentle nudge on his arm made him look back. “W-What’s that, Panli?”

“The song’s over… but can I listen to ‘Come Closer’ again?” Panli asked.

Klaijai nodded and replayed Come Closer As the melody of the song that drove him crazy with embarrassment started again, he pretended to look away, hoping it would ease his shyness. But it didn’t help at all.

He admitted he was disappointed he couldn’t recall the feeling of their “first kiss.” But upon reflection, there was something even more memorable than that moment: the smile on Moon’s face.

Even if it was just a subtle smirk, it reassured Klaijai that Panli wasn’t rejecting him. Klaijai didn’t know how Panli felt right now, but he knew one thing…

If they got even closer like this again, Panli might end up liking Klaijai far more than the song Come Closer—by a long shot.
