Pitbabe S2, Chapter 33 pg 6

Something’s about to happen… something serious.

But I don’t know what it is.

   “Liu.”

“Mmm…” she responds lazily, sounding like she’s on the verge of sleep.

   “Lend me a hand.”

“Go play somewhere else, kid,” Liu said, refusing to cooperate and even closing her eyes to avoid me. But maybe that’s because I didn’t explain clearly. “I need to rest my eyes for a sec.”

I shot up from my chair and grabbed her arm. Liu jolted, eyes snapping open to stare at me in confusion. In my urgency, I couldn’t explain right away, but luckily, Liu’s sharp enough. I figured she could probably guess what my weird behavior meant. She sat still, letting me hold her wrist without resisting.

I focused hard, and within seconds, the images I needed flashed in my mind. They weren’t crystal clear, and some scenes were hard to make out since they were from Liu’s perspective, but several key images helped me piece together what was about to happen in the near future.

   My gut was right.

“What?” Liu asked the moment I let go of her wrist. “What’d you see?”

“Go upstairs, gather all the important stuff and lock it in the safe, secure the lab door, get everyone into one room, turn off all the lights, and stay as quiet as possible.”

I spoke rapidly, stuffing critical items into my shoulder bag, unplugging every computer cord, then opening the side drawer to grab the gun and tuck it into my waistband. Liu just stared, mouth agape, like she was waiting for the right moment to unleash the hundred questions swirling in her head.

“Huh?” was the first word she managed. “Wait… what’s going on?”

“Someone’s coming,” I said. “Tell everyone to get ready.”

   “Now?”

   “Yeah.”

   “Who?”

   “Probably not our friends.”

I picked up the car keys, slung the bag over my shoulder, then looked around again to review if there was anything else I needed to take care of.

“So, where are you going?” Mr. Liu stood up and looked at me, his tired, sluggish expression instantly replaced with alertness. He looked more awake than usual.

“To lure them,” I replied calmly.

   “Huh?”

“To prevent those guys from reaching here.”

Liu hesitated, and judging by her tangled expression, she was likely weighing heavily on whether to support my plan or not.

   “Alone?”

“Why would I bring others along to be a burden?”

The researcher sister gritted her teeth, raising her hand like an exasperated aunt about to smack her cheeky little brother for talking back. Normally, I’d probably egg her on just to get a reaction, but we don’t have time for that now. I need to get out of here, whether Liu agrees or not.

“Lock all the doors,” I said as I strode toward the exit. “Tell everyone to take care of themselves. And don’t worry—I move faster alone. I promise I won’t let those guys get anywhere near here.”

I heard Liu shouting something after me as I ran to the car, but I couldn’t make out what it was. If I had to guess, it was probably some curse fitting for someone like me.

   CHARLIE:

I drove away from the lab without a clear destination. I didn’t even know where those guys were. The vision of the future Liu saw didn’t clearly show the context—just the outcome: them storming the lab. I saw everyone forced to the ground, each person taking a hit or two. I was in worse shape than the rest, battered beyond recognition. That’s what’ll happen if I let them reach the lab.

There were several attackers, but only one face was clear.

   That damn Winner.

Just seeing his face was enough to trace the cause. From my analysis, I think Tony’s side is getting desperate. They’re probably under pressure from time and other factors, forcing them to deal with us quickly. Otherwise, they wouldn’t resort to something this brazen after trying to hit us with sneaky schemes from the shadows all this time. For them to come straight at us like this means they’re cornered too.

One of their targets is obviously our research data, the drug samples, and, most likely, me. If we’re talking about utility, I don’t think Tony is stupid enough to hope he can use me again. He’s probably the one who knows best that I’d rather die than follow his orders. So what he wants from me is likely my death.

If I were Tony, I’d want to get rid of an annoying thorn like myself too.

And if my assumptions are correct, the moment our cars pass each other on the road, they’ll choose to turn and follow me instead of heading for the lab.

   Like they’re doing right now.
