Pitbabe S2, Chapter 37 pg 6
No way Phii Babe would fall for that foreign kid.
Lost in my warm, fuzzy thoughts, I didn’t even notice that the famous racer was standing so close to me.
Right in front of me.
Smiling at me.
“Hey, Charlie.”
He greeted me, too. I always want to be the one to say hi first whenever we meet, but I’m never brave enough. I’m too shy and never know what to say. Even though I’m fine with socializing in general, I have a huge problem acting normal around Phii Babe. So, every time, he ends up being the one to approach me first.
“Hey, Phii Babe,” I said. Did my voice sound weird? Or did I accidentally give him that goofy smile again? Why did he chuckle just because I greeted him back? “Congrats! Another win.”
What’s with him?
“How was it just now?”
“Huh?”
“The race… were you watching?”
“Check this out,” I replied instantly. “You drove so well today, Phii. The balance was spot-on, faster than the last race too. That final corner exit was so smooth—freaking cool!”
I gave him two enthusiastic thumbs-up, which made Phii Babe laugh even louder. It’s not hard to guess why—because I accidentally rambled on and on, throwing in all those exaggerated gestures of admiration.
Every time I’m around Phii Babe, I end up like this.
“Nice necklace,” Phii Babe suddenly commented out of the blue while I stood there with an awkward smile, unsure how to act. “You wear it all the time. Did your boyfriend give it to you?”
Actually, I’d noticed several times that he always seemed to stare at this necklace whenever we met. I don’t get why he’s so interested in it—it’s just a plain silver chain with a simple ring looped onto it. I can’t even remember where I got it or when I bought it. I just feel good wearing it, so I never take it off. That’s all.
“Huh? Oh! No way!” I quickly waved my hands in a flurry of denial. “I… don’t have a boyfriend.”
“No way!” Phii Babe tilted his head, looking at me. His gaze made my heart pound so hard it felt like it might burst out of my chest. He looked so cute that I started questioning whether I even had the right to be this close to him. “A guy as handsome as you?”
Phii Babe called me handsome.
I could die right now. Just drop dead right here, this instant.
“Uh…”
“Just kidding.”
“What?”
“Not about you being handsome—you really are,” Phii Babe hurried to clarify, as if worried I’d misinterpret his intentions. But honestly, I was too flustered to think that deeply right now. “I meant the necklace. I know it wasn’t a gift from a boyfriend.”
I wasn’t sure how to respond because I didn’t quite understand what he meant by that.
“Wanna hear a secret?” Phii Babe leaned in close, whispering softly, true to his claim that it was a secret. I should’ve been excited about that, but right now, my feelings had long surpassed mere excitement. I froze as he got closer, the scent of his cologne wiping every other fragrance in the world from my mind. “That ring you wear around your neck every day? You actually bought it for me for my birthday last year. But we broke up before you could give it to me.”
“Huh?”
What did Phii Babe just say?
I bought it for him? We broke up? What does that mean?
Are you saying we used to date? That’s insane. Me and Pitbabe as boyfriends? That’s more ridiculous than a chicken laying a live chick.
“Phii Babe, I told you not to tease Charlie!”
A heavenly sound rang out as I stood frozen like a statue in front of my crush. Jeff stepped in between me and Phii Babe, as if he didn’t want him to say anything more. He spoke with a slightly annoyed expression (I have no idea how Jeff dares to be annoyed at Phii Babe). Phii Babe backed off, giving a casual shrug, a faint smirk tugging at his lips like he was pleased with successfully teasing me. Then he walked away without a word.
“You just stand there and let him mess with you every time,” Jeff grumbled about Phii Babe before turning to grumble at me. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Phii Babe was saying weird stuff again.”
“He just talks nonsense. The more clueless you are, the more he loves teasing you.”
Jeff didn’t even ask what Phii Babe said, or maybe he’d heard it from the start—I don’t know. This little brother of mine is always like this. Sometimes I feel like Jeff and Phii Babe share a ton of secrets, secrets others might know but I’m absolutely not allowed to. Like that ring thing, for example.
Ugh… I don’t know anymore.
What I do know is that from now on, I need to be more careful around Phii Babe.
