Pitbabes2, Chapter 4 pg3

“I know it. Been there plenty,” I replied casually, struggling to pull the not-so-small guy up from the sofa. It was a real hassle since Charlie wasn’t cooperating at all, just slumping like dead weight. “Stand properly, come on.”

“How do you go there so often? My boyfriend’s super strict.”

“Even when you’re drunk, you still pick fights, huh?”

   “Mmm… but I can’t win.”

“What now?” Finally, I got him to stand, though he was leaning most of his weight on me. Still, he seemed manageable enough to get to the car. The only problem was the constant mumbling in my ear. He sure gets chatty when drunk. “What’s with all the talking, huh?”

“You’re pretty too, but you can’t compare.”

“Can’t compare to what? You wanna fight me?”

“Can’t compare to my boyfriend,” Charlie slurred. He was swaying so much I had to wrap my arms around him to keep him steady. The bespectacled kid buried his face in the crook of my neck, his hot breath sending a slight shiver down my spine, but now wasn’t the time to think about that. “My boyfriend… the best.”

   “The best at what?”

Even knowing he was drunk, I couldn’t help but want to know.

“Pretty, cute, super handsome,” his answer genuinely made me laugh. I had no idea if this was his true feelings or just drunken rambling fueled by alcohol. “The greatest in the world.”

   “The greatest in the world?”

“Yesh.” It might sound a bit odd, but I actually like when he slurs like this. “Sulkiest… in the world.”

The content, though, wasn’t as pleasant.

   “Cursing machine… a thousand horsepower.”

I was speechless. Normally, Charlie hardly ever talks like this to me (though he probably does with others). When I nag, he just says, “Yes, yes.” Who would’ve thought he secretly sees me as a thousand-horsepower cursing machine?

“Are you faking being drunk to roast me or what?”

   “Beh… Babe.”

   “Sigh.”

I gave up trying to talk to him now. His voice was hard to understand, and his topics were all over the place. I’d be insane to try finding sense in a drunk person’s words. So, I decided to just hoist the drunk guy and get him to the car to head home. Sure, we could’ve crashed at Phii Alan’s place, but with so many people around, it feels like a scout camp or something—not exactly comfy. Plus, I’m still fully sober. Taking this drunk kid back home to sleep is probably the better choice.

While in the car, Charlie fell asleep as usual. He’s the type who gets sleepy when drunk, which is a good thing in that he doesn’t cause trouble, but the downside is he might just collapse anywhere. If we took him drinking elsewhere, we’d have to keep an eye on him, but since Charlie only drinks at Alan’s place, those issues aren’t a problem.

The drunk guy was shifting around, looking uncomfortable in his sleep. Well, of course—who could sleep comfortably in a supercar? Being strapped in with a seatbelt probably made it even more stifling. The furrowed knot of his brows made it easy to guess.

“Ugh…” Charlie let out a displeased grunt before reluctantly opening his eyes.

   “Drunk and grumpy, huh?”

   “Babe.”

   “Yeah, yeah, I got you.”

Charlie didn’t respond. He glanced around, as if surveying his surroundings and piecing together what had happened in his head—though he probably wasn’t getting much clarity. He still didn’t seem fully sober, just slightly more aware than before.

“What’s up? Why’d you secretly drink until you got this wasted?”

“Nothing,” Charlie replied flatly. “Just bored.”

“Why not hang out with the others?”

   “Wanted to play games.”

“Played until you got drunk, huh?”

“Mm, once in a while,” Charlie said, then closed his eyes again. He turned his face toward the car window, subtly signaling he didn’t want to continue the conversation. That was the second thing that piqued my concern. Charlie was definitely acting strange. I wasn’t imagining it.

“You okay?” I asked. “Want to grab something to eat? I can stop somewhere.”

“No thanks. I just want to go home and sleep.”
