“Yesterday, Phii Shin went to see his friend at my faculty. When he saw me, he quickly walked away.”
“…”
“It’s obvious he was avoiding me on purpose.”
“I’m sorry, Kant… it’s all because of me that Phii Shin isn’t talking to you either.”
“You don’t need to apologize to me. Phii Shin’s grown up, shouldn’t he know better?”
“…”
“I get that he’s not ready to face you, I can understand that… but avoiding me too? I don’t quite get it.”
“Is Phii Shin scared of having to answer something?”
Kant shook his head in frustration before saying, “I might seem selfish for siding with my friend right now, but I’ll be that selfish guy. If I get to confront Phii Shin face-to-face, I’d say… Phii Shin, you’re freaking cruel.”
“…”
“If you don’t want to see us like before, that’s fine, but don’t act like we’re strangers.”
“…”
“A smile would’ve been nice.”
“…”
“It’s because of me that everything’s changed.”
“…”
“No one’s cruel, Kant… everyone has their own reasons.”
“…”
“You don’t need to worry about me, Kant. You know how strong I am,” Klai said with a smile to his friend. Kant sighed and shook his head, clearly not buying what he saw. “I’m okay, really.”
“Go fool someone else… don’t try to fool your close friend like me.”
“…”
“If it hurts, say it hurts… got it, Klai?”
The bitter smile slowly faded, replaced by burning eyes. “Yeah… I understand.”
“…”
“It hurts so much, Kant.”
“My Klai…” Kant gently ruffled his hair to comfort him. “Come back to being the amazing Klai soon, okay?”
“Yeah… give me a little time. It won’t be long. The awesome Klai will be back soon.”
The phrase “won’t be long” means different things to different people. For some, it might only take a few months. For others, it could stretch to a year. Klai thought the reason this phrase could drag on for so long was due to something uncontrollable.
Like people’s thoughts and words.
For instance, right now, his confession to Phii Shin had become a topic of interest among his classmates. Klai had spent weeks healing his heart. He was almost succeeding in bringing back the “amazing Klai,” nearly making “not long” less than a year. But everything he’d worked for crumbled in a split second, just because he overheard a conversation among his classmates.
“Isn’t that the guy who confessed to Phii Shin?”
“Yeah, that’s him.”
“I saw him dancing with Phii Shin at the freshman booth.”
“Heard he’s a junior from the same school… probably had a crush on Phii Shin for a long time.”
“But Phii Shin doesn’t like him.”
“Honestly… he shouldn’t have confessed. Now he’s lost both a senior and a friend.”
“Klai probably thought Phii Shin liked him, right?”
“Delusional, huh?”
“Yeah.”
Even though Klai had heard conversations like this many times, he never got used to it. His heart still ached, and memories kept replaying in his mind. He chose to sit in the front row to avoid hearing these discussions, but he could never escape them. The voices of his classmates always managed to slip through.
“Klai…”
The person called turned to see his close friend, who gently rubbed his arm. “I am okay, Cake.”
Because his confession to Phii Shin had become a hot topic in the department last week, Klai decided to tell his two close friends about it. He had never told Cake or Som before that he had a crush on Phii Shin. When they found out, they comforted him wholeheartedly.
“Okay? That’s crazy,” Som, sitting next to Cake, spoke up before turning to the classmates sitting behind them. “Can you guys talk a bit quieter?”
“The professor hasn’t arrived yet… it’s not wrong to talk loudly, is it?”
“Manners... try having some manners.”
“Som...” Klai interrupts as he sees Som arguing with that group of girls, “Don’t start trouble because of me.”
Som looks annoyed at being stopped, then turns to him, “They’re so rude, Klai.”
“What they’re saying is the truth... there’s nothing we can do but accept it.”
