My Moon, Chapter 9 pg 1

   Chapter 9:

   Ding!

Many people probably love the sound of the elevator chime, signaling they’ve reached their destination. Klai used to like it too. But now, he didn’t like it at all. The loud ding! was a signal that…

Klai’s time with Moon was over.

“Which building is your class in?” the taller figure asked as they stepped out of the elevator together.

“I have class in Building Eleven…” Klai paused to say goodbye, assuming Moon had classes in a different building.

“Actually, I have class in this building too,” Panli said. “But it’s not time yet, so I’m heading to Building Eleven for some errands first.”

   “Oh… same building as me.”

“Yep,” Panli nodded, giving him a faint smile.

This time… extend the moment yourself, Klai. If you want to stay with him a bit longer… you’ve got to try, Klai. “Want to walk to Building Eleven together?”

   “…”

   “And then we’ll part ways.”

Moon smiled and nodded. “Sounds good, kha.”

Klai nodded as an invitation to the other, then walked out of the Faculty of Law building. His steps were steady—not too fast, not too slow. The person clutching the report to their chest stole glances at the one walking beside them.

His thin lips pressed together as his blank mind scrambled to find a topic to keep the conversation going with Moon while heading to Building Eleven. Klai didn’t know where they’d have to part, but before they did…

…he wanted to talk just a bit more.

“Panli…” His heart, afraid of missing the chance to talk, rushed to call out despite not having any good conversation topics in mind.

   “Yes, kha?”

What to say next… might as well go with the most basic topic. “The weather’s really nice today, isn’t it?”

Panli looked up at the sky before turning to him. “Does that mean you like sunny days, kha?”

“Uh…” The sun wasn’t too strong, but honestly, it was still pretty hot. Why didn’t you think before speaking, Klaijai? “To be honest, I’m starting to feel hot already,” he said, giving the other a sheepish smile.

At that moment, Moon flashed a bright smile that even the sunlight couldn’t rival. Their large hand moved to hover over his forehead, as if shielding him from the sun.

“I’ll block the sun for you, kha.”

Klai gave a small smile while looking at Moon, then nodded firmly. “Thanks, Panli.”

“Actually, I could use the report to shade you, but since the sun’s not too strong, I think my hand is enough.”

   “…”

“Klaijai…” Moon called out. In the next second, their playful gaze turned warm. “I’ll protect you.”

Klai broke into a wide smile, understanding the meaning of the English phrase Panli used. “Translate it for me.”

“It means I’ll protect you, KhunKlai, kha.”

“…” Now Klai was insanely shy. Hearing Panli’s perfect English accent made him even shyer—so shy he didn’t know what to say next.

“Walking with your head down and all quiet like that?”

“No way… I’m not shy.” Sorry for lying, Panli, but if I didn’t say this, it’d look too suspicious.

“Then what’s wrong, kha?” Moon asked with a laugh.

“I…” I’m out of ideas. I don’t know what excuse to give Panli, T_T. “I was just thinking that Panli’s hand does a pretty good job of blocking the sun.”

Panli chuckled before saying, “Should I lend you my hand to block the sun every day, kha?”

   “No way... I’d feel bad.”

“But I’m happy to do it.”

Klai felt like he’d been hit with nonstop punches from the moment they started walking together, leaving his brain completely foggy. He couldn’t come up with anything to keep the conversation going. Klai pressed his lips together to suppress a smile, then lowered his head to stare at his black leather shoes.

   “...”

But because Moon was a playful person who excelled at keeping conversations alive, he started a new topic without letting silence creep in.

“How’s the cactus I gave you doing?”

The person being asked flashed a wide smile at Moon before replying, “It’s growing strong every single day.”

   “Really?”

   “Mhm.”

“Must be because you take such good care of it.”

“Panli, you went out of your way to pick it as a gift, so I have to look after it well.”

   “Thank you.”

Klai nodded firmly, his almond-shaped eyes widening as if he’d just remembered something. His slender hand reached into his pants pocket to pull out his phone before he said, “Hey, I have pictures to show you! I took some.”

   “Where? Let me see!”

The black phone was raised, and he opened the photo album to show Moon the pictures of the cactus he’d kept.

“Here it is... sitting next to the old one I’ve been raising.”

“Did you buy that one yourself?”

   “Yup~”

   “They look so cute together.”

“I thought the same as you, Panli... so I placed them side by side on my desk.”

At that moment, Moon moved closer while they walked along the path. The taller person closed the gap between them by lowering the hand that had been shielding the sun and gently touching Klai’s head, pulling him even closer.

Klai swallowed hard while staring at the phone screen displaying Rak plant. They were so close now that he didn’t dare move. But for some reason, Klai chose to turn his face and look at the other.

In this moment… Klai saw Moon’s smooth face leaning down slightly, a faint smile on his lips as he looked at the photos on Klai’s phone. Though their faces were a reasonable distance apart, Klai, unaccustomed to the closeness, felt they were too near.

His unruly heart, beating fast and hard, was already troublesome enough. His teasing mind made it even worse, conjuring up a song stuck in his memory—a melody that made his heart tremble even more.

   In Klaijai’s ears,

   Only this song echoed…

“I knew it instantly, and loved instantly. You’re the luck that came to me. Since meeting you, life feels like a dream that happens when I open my eyes.”

   “…”

“I want to stop time right now, from the moment my life had you in it. You make a weary person dare to open their heart. Stop, stop life, stop with this person… no matter how great anyone else might be.”

“KhunKlai, let’s keep them together like this forever, okay?”

“Stop, stop love, my whole heart will stop with you alone.”

“We’ve decided to place them together… so we’ll keep them like this.”

Panli smiled while meeting his gaze, then turned back to the photos on the phone. He pointed at something in the image and asked, “That book… it looks really interesting, KhunKlai.”

“Oh, it’s a fairy tale about a lonely moon. This moon travels everywhere to find someone to stay with it at night, since most people are asleep.”

“And then what? Did this moon find a friend?”

Klai gave a shy smile. He loved how Panli seemed so interested in what he was sharing. “It did… moon found a star to keep it company at night.”

“In the story, moon has a star as a friend… but in real life, who’ll be moon’s companion?”
