 Pitbabe S2, Chapter 35 pg 1

   BABE:

   Months ago

“What are you doing here… Kenta?”

I can’t deny that running into him here was unexpected. More than that, his presence hints at some kind of change—whether it’s a rise to the top or a plunge into eternal darkness, I can’t say. That’s beyond my ability to answer. The only thing I’m certain of is that our peace lasted just two years.

Kenta avoids my gaze. He probably didn’t expect to get caught, let alone by me, his former ally who he nearly killed two years ago. If you asked whether I still hold a grudge, I’d say no without hesitation. I assumed back then we’d never cross paths again.

Who would’ve thought a story I believed was over would have a sequel waiting?

“Cops?” Since the suspect won’t talk, I have to prod him to get a reaction. Otherwise, we’ll be here all day.

“No… please,” Kenta responds, his anxious expression surprising me. From what I know, those under Tony’s command have no reason to fear the police, considering their boss outranks even the highest commander. “I swear I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m just looking for something.”

   “What thing?”

Kenta hesitates again. In the past, he wouldn’t have bothered with my questions. He’d have likely snapped, “Why the hell do you care?” or something like that. But now, he seems torn, as if he wants to spill but isn’t sure he should.

“If you don’t answer, I’m really calling the cops.”

“It’s…” He’s still hesitant until the last second. “It’s Way’s stuff.”

His response wasn’t exactly clear. Honestly, it felt like a half-baked, evasive answer. This place used to belong to Way, so of course, if someone came here to retrieve something, there’s a ninety percent chance it was his. Even though he answered my question, it didn’t make me feel any less uneasy about his presence.

   “What thing?” I pressed.

   “I don’t know,” Kenta replied.

“If you answer like that, how am I supposed to trust you?”

“I really don’t know. He just told me to come get it,” Kenta said, his face serious. “He gave me the order a long time ago, before the auction two years back. I don’t know why he chose to tell me. He didn’t explain anything. All I know is there’s something important in the safe here. Way said if he dies, I should come open it.”

I stared at him, weighing whether to believe him or not. Both options came with a steep price. From Kenta’s expression and demeanor, I had to admit he seemed fairly trustworthy. The anxiety and worry in his eyes were unmistakable—something I’d never seen before from a robotic servant like him.

But at the same time, what made me hesitate was that Way chose to share this with Kenta. If what he’s saying is true, the item in the safe must be incredibly important. Otherwise, why would Way only instruct someone to open it after his death? If that’s the case, why didn’t he tell Phii Alan, the person he signed the showroom over to, or Babe, his closest friend? Why Kenta? Were the two of them close back in that house? Doesn’t seem likely. From what I know, Babe said Way was kept in a separate mansion, isolated from the other kids like Babe, Pete, and Kenta during that time. (Charlie and Jeff were from a different batch altogether—Charlie was apparently taken in after Babe had already left the house.) So, closeness doesn’t seem like a plausible reason.

Or could it have something to do with Tony?

If the important item is connected to that bastard, maybe it makes more sense that Way entrusted it to Kenta.

What should I do… Should I trust him?

“Listen,” Kenta stepped closer, his voice dropping as if afraid someone might overhear. But no matter how soft his voice was, I could feel the weight in every word he spoke. “Things have changed now.”
