 Pitbabe S2, Chapter 37 pg 2

   I’m gonna lose it.

   “You’re talking like everyone’s gay.”

“So if they were gay, that’d be right up Babe’s alley?”

   “Ugh, Charlie!”

   I can’t take this anymore.

Why is making up with someone so complicated? I’m claiming my right to go back to being the sulky one instead.

“I compliment your looks every single day, and you never care. But the one time I praise a model, you accuse me of wanting them. Are you nuts?”

“I just don’t want Babe liking someone else more…”

“How could anyone come close? Since we got together, have I ever paid attention to anyone else? Ask yourself. All day, every day, I’m focused on you. Everyone else knows I’m head over heels for you, ready to die for you. But you’re the only one throwing a fit, accusing me of liking this person or that. If I wanted someone else, it’d be easy—why would I risk my life to bring you back? Think, you glasses-wearing goof!”

I think I’ve finally cracked the code on how to properly make up with my boyfriend. Because now, not only has Charlie stopped giving me that sour face, but I’ve also left him gaping, with no comeback in sight. Looks like I need to use this method more often.

   “You done sulking yet?”

“Done… I’m done,” Charlie stammered, his face a mix of confusion, like he still wasn’t sure how to feel.

“Good job,” I said, giving him a thumbs-up before spreading my arms for the next step. “Now come here for a hug.”

Charlie let out a laugh but gave in willingly. He pulled me into a tight hug, planting kisses on my cheek and ear like he always does. I returned the favor in the same way, not one to be outdone.

   “This works?” Charlie said, chuckling.

   “What?”

“I was sulking, and Babe just scolds me and tells me to stop?”

   “That’s how I make up.”

“Is that how they do it at Babe’s house?”

“Yup, that’s how we roll at my place. Got a problem with it?”

Charlie didn’t say anything, just laughed, which probably meant he was in a better mood now.

We let the conversation pause for a bit. All that was left was the sound of our breathing. We held each other quietly, neither of us saying a word. I figured Charlie probably wanted some quiet time together, since that’s his love language—unlike mine, which is probably more about picking fights or asking him to do something for me.

But after a moment, a strange feeling started creeping in. Charlie was too quiet for too long. He hugged me tighter, showing no sign of letting go, and kept burying his face in my shoulder. No matter how much he loves silence, I didn’t think this was the behavior of someone who was relaxed.

   “Charlie?”

   “Hm?”

   Even his response sounded off.

   “You okay?”

   He went silent.

That was the sign I was right.

   Something was wrong with him.

“Charlie,” I called again. “What’s going on?”

His demeanor shifted so quickly it was startling. Just moments ago, he was arguing with me, teasing, smiling, and laughing like normal. But in the few minutes we were holding each other, he changed—like he was a completely different person.

“Babe,” he finally spoke, his voice deeper than before, so soft it was as if he was running out of strength.

   “Yeah, what is it?”

   “Let’s break up.”

Suddenly, everything felt unreal. I was confused, wondering if I was dreaming or if the drugs I took were making me hallucinate. Why would Charlie say something like that? Was he misunderstanding something, or was I the one misunderstanding? Or maybe he was still mad about earlier.

“Not funny,” I said sternly, trying to pull away from his embrace, but Charlie held on. He hugged me so tightly I could barely move. “If you’re messing with me, use a different joke.”

   “I’m not messing with you.”

“Charlie, I’m gonna get mad for real.”

   “I’m serious.”

That tone… why did he have to use that tone?

If he was just teasing, there was no need to act this convincing.

   “Let’s… break up.”
